Do young children have adult syntactic competence?
نویسنده
چکیده
Many developmental psycholinguists assume that young children have adult syntactic competence, this assumption being operationalized in the use of adult-like grammars to describe young children's language. This "continuity assumption" has never had strong empirical support, but recently a number of new findings have emerged - both from systematic analyses of children's spontaneous speech and from controlled experiments - that contradict it directly. In general, the key finding is that most of children's early linguistic competence is item based, and therefore their language development proceeds in a piecemeal fashion with virtually no evidence of any system-wide syntactic categories, schemas, or parameters. For a variety of reasons, these findings are not easily explained in terms of the development of children's skills of linguistic performance, pragmatics, or other "external" factors. The framework of an alternative, usage-based theory of child language acquisition - relying explicitly on new models from Cognitive-Functional Linguistics - is presented.

In his paper “Do young children have adult syntactic competence?” Tomasello (Cognition 74 (2000) 209) interprets young children’s conservatism in language production as evidence that early language use, and verb use in particular, are based entirely on concrete lexical representations, showing no evidence of abstract syntactic categories such as “verb” or “transitive sentence”. In this reply, I...
متن کاملYoung children's demonstration of adult-like syntactic competence - evidence from Mandarin Chinese
Abstract: This study investigated whether Mandarin-speaking children can demonstrate adult-like syntactic competence. Mandarin-speaking 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-year-olds’ and adults’ comprehension of agent-patient relations across four Mandarin transitive constructions with the novel verbs: SVO construction, ba-construction, subjectless ba-construciton, and topicalization construction were examined using...

Thorough investigation of early syntactic knowledge necessitates methodologies that tap young children's linguistic competence while minimizing extra-linguistic demands and not relying on production. The preferential looking paradigm is uniquely suited to such a task. We present here a test case for the exploration of early syntactic knowledge in young children: Principle C effects at 30 months...
متن کاملUnravelling competence, performance and pragmatics in the speech of young children*
Inferences about linguistic competence in children are typically based on spontaneous speech. This poses a problem since we know that other factors are also involved in speech production. Children who may use complex object and adverbial NPs do not use complex subject NPs. Is this a competence deficit, a performance problem, or simply a reflection of pragmatic factors? Evidence presented here s...
